Comparing deck and patio designs

Comparing deck and patio designs

November 30, 2021

When choosing how to design your custom deck for your home, there are a variety of designs you can choose from to create a relaxing and functional outdoor oasis.

Screened-in porches

While these were commonly built directly onto houses, usually off the back door for easy access, screened-in porches are now more elaborate. Screen-in porches can now be added as a component to your deck design. Rather than using glass windows, a screen-in porch uses large screens to provide you with a beautiful outdoor experience without the rain, dust, bugs, etc.

Pergolas

Pergolas are another great addition to a patio or a deck space. These are freestanding structures that feature open sides with slatted or solid roofs. They can also feature beautiful latticework. Typically pergolas are used with your landscape design to define walking spaces, cover pathways, and provide cover on your patio or deck area.

Adding a roof to your deck can help keep the warmth in and the snow and rain out during the winter months and protect you from the hot sun in the summer. This can create a space for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors.  There are a variety of porch roof styles to choose from, including:

Gable style- This is one of the most common types of porch roofs and is compatible with many different houses. This style is simple, with a triangle-shaped roof that looks great with colonial style and Cape Cod-style homes. This style is built with a wide triangle that overhangs the deck’s side to allow for water runoff.

Shed style- This type of roof is one with a sloping surface that is attached to the upper end of the house wall. This is commonly used on a porch deck or a longer, narrower porch. This offers a shallow design to complement the design of your home.

Hip style- This style of roof has a roof side that slopes down the walls, all with equal angles. There are no gables present, and the slope is gentle. This type of roof will extend past the wall of the home to add a visually appealing slope or slant.
