Windows

When selecting replacement windows for your home, there are many more decisions than just what will look best. What you may not be aware of is the type of window you choose can greatly affect how energy efficient your home will be. Things to consider are:

  • Style
Casement are most efficient, double hung and sliding windows are other options.
  • R-Value
The most important factor to consider when rating energy efficiency of your window. R-value measures how much heat loss your windows prevent. The higher the “R-value” the better.
  • U-Factor
The second most important rating to consider which measures how well a window prevents air leakage between the frame and the sash. Standard U-factor of 0.35 or less are deemed energy efficient. Home owners in cold windy climates like we often have here in Pittsburgh should put as much importance on the U-factor as the R-value.
  • Low-E Windows
Considered the gold standard in energy-efficient windows. Low-E windows consist of two panes of glass (an inner and outer pane), with an inert gas – such as argon between them. This provides the ultimate in insulation without causing any discoloration or fogginess of the glass.
  • Solar Penetration (UV Protection)
Sun is constantly shining even on a dreary day. You may notice anything in the sun’s path near a window fading, like the carpet, a photo or even furniture. To help prevent this, look for window with an ultraviolet-blocking coating or a UV coating. Just like sun block. the better the UV coating the more protection from the sun. This will allow the less harmless rays of sun to shine through.
  • Condensation Prevention
With great differences in temperature along comes condensation on your windows, inside and out. If the humidity levels and temperature inside your home is high and the outside temperature is low, you will probably experience condensation on your windows. Frequent moisture can cause mold, frame damage as well as problems with proper sealing. Look closely at the construction of a window for high-quality metal spacers and warm-air technology.

Other factors to consider include – Where to place a window if it is going in an addition or part of a remodel and also building code requirements.
